This Christmas tree sale is organised by 4th Ewell (Nonsuch) Scout Group. The Group was established in 1944, and has been providing high quality Scouting to young people aged between 6 and 18 years old in the local area for over 70 years. The Group is a registered charity, number 305718, and our Headquarters is in Bluegates, London Road, Ewell which is the hub of weekly meetings.
Through the adventure of Scouting, our young people get to learn new skills, try exciting activities, have their first taste of responsibility and take risks in a safe environment. However, we receive no central government funding to provide these services. We rely entirely volunteers, donations and proceeds of fund raising events in order continue our work.
Rejoin the adventure
Scouting simply would not exist without the skills and enthusiasm of thousands of adult helpers. The most important thing to remember is that everyone has something to offer. And no matter how much time you can spare, there is a role to suit everyone in Scouting.
Making a difference
The proceeds of our tree sales have helped every member of the Group benefit from new resources and activities. We have been able to purhase new vehicles, invest in a equipment for an archery range and also refitted the kitchen at our HQ. In recent years we have purchased a bouldering wall to compliment the modular caving system we bought from our friends at 8by4 following the 2013 sale. Funds have also been used to subsidise the cost of activities and camps to ensure scouting really is available to all.

The proceeds of our 2017 sale have helped every member of the Group benefit from new resources and activities. We have invested in equipment for our HQ and camping for the benefit of our members. Tree Care
The following steps will help to minimise needle drop (although please bear in mind they cannot eradicate it altogether!)
The Right Tree Stand
Make sure you have a suitable water holding tree stand for your tree. If you don't we will be selling them at our tree sale. See our tree stands for more information
Plan Ahead
Don’t bring your Christmas Tree into a warm environment as soon as you have collected it – this would be like coming out of a sauna and jumping into a pool of ice for the tree. Prepare the room where the tree will be positioned by turning off any heating. If the tree is going to be near a source of heat, such as a radiator, either turn off the heat source or find an alternate location. Warm lights can also be problem.
Ultimately, this helps the tree from loosing moisture from it’s needles and should make the tree last longer and look fresher.
Receiving The Tree
When you get your tree home cut about half an inch off the stump in order to open the pores of the tree; this helps the tree to draw up water and stay fresh - or ask us to do this when you buy your tree. Keep the tree outside in a cool place standing in water with the net on before bringing it indoors. Do not remove the net until the tree has been brought in as it can be difficult to manoeuvre unwrapped.
Before bringing the tree indoors, bang the bottom of the tree to remove any loose needles which the tree naturally sheds throughout it’s life. We find it’s best if you stand the tree indoors within a water holding Christmas Tree Stand.
Preventing Needle Drop
While we supply premium quality trees the trees are natural and can drop small amounts of needles while they are living.
Lower the room temperature and minimise any draughts by keeping doors closed
Bring indoors with the mesh intact
Cut the mesh carefully so to avoid damaging the tree
Do not place the tree near a heat source such as a radiator, fire or light
Use a water holding Christmas Tree Stand and keep it topped up each day - a tree can drink up to 2 litres of water per day!
Recycling
Many local authorities offer recycling schemes after the festive period – please dispose of your tree in accordance with your local recycling policies.
Epsom and Ewell
From Monday 8 January Epsom & Ewell Council will operate a free real Christmas tree recycling collection for all residents. Collections will take place on your normal collection days during weeks commencing Monday 15 and Monday 29 January. Check your collection day. Leave your real Christmas tree (all decorations removed) in a clearly visible place next to your refuse bin and they will collect it separately for recycling. Don't cut up your tree, it's easier for them to handle whole.
