886 Squadron is a small Air Cadet unit in the city of Ripon.
The unit was founded in Ripon in 1979 and was given Squadron status in May 1984.
The squadrons crest depicts the city horn, showing the units close ties with the city. Even the squadrons number, 886, was chosen in 1984 for its meaning to the City, as in 886AD King Alfred the Great gave the town a horn to represent a Charter.
Cadets can enrol as members of the ATC from 13 years old up until 17, but can stay as cadets until they reach 20.
Activities range from Flying & Gliding to Marksmanship Shooting, Athletics & Sports, Ceremonial Drill, Fieldcraft, First Aid, Social Activities, Visits to RAF stations and much more.
The squadron meets on Tuesday and Friday evenings at the Cadet Centre on Clotherholme Road. (On the right, just before the Army Camp. See website for a map.) 7- 9.30 pm.
The squadron is run by local uniformed volunteer staff and has approx 30 cadets from the surrounding area.
So whether you want to fly an RAF aircraft, conquer peaks on your DofE or simply meet new and like minded people, the Air Cadets could be for you.
