Originally a Scandinavian idea, forest schools operate on the principle that children of all ages can benefit greatly from the hands on learning opportunities inherently present in a woodland environment. In an age when many children have few opportunities to be outdoors it offers them a way to learn and experience a broad curriculum in a woodland setting, with regular visits throughout the year.
Sessions take place in an area where children normally don’t have regular access. To a large extent the sessions are play-based, child-initiated and there are no prescribed objectives set by adults. All children succeed through manageable tasks, with or without support, which gives empowerment. Adults encourage children to follow their own instincts, and motivate learning through ‘playing’. Relationships are formed between the child, their peers, adults and their environment which builds the child’s self-esteem and confidence. Children help to set agreed boundaries\rules. Children are supported to take reasonable risks in their play. There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.
