I am Brad 'mrshoeshineman' Rumble. I make paintings, toys and illustrations with my own unique style.
Brad 'mrshoeshineman' Rumble. The name 'mrshoeshineman' comes from one of his bands old songs, which pretty much captured his completely unique perspective that you'd be hard pressed to find elsewhere, giving him a certain eccentricity often leading to being called 'crazy' (in the best kind of way) or more so 'lunatic'.
Taking influence from urban artists, graphic novel artists, tattoo artists, toy designers, illustrators, graff writers, skateboard designers, musicians and movie special fx gurus such as Greg 'Craola' Simkins (((Attach image))), Alex Pardee (((attach image))), Ashley Wood (((attach image))), Microbo (((attach image))), Wayne Barlow, Jhonen Vasquez, Marcus Oakley, Ruby Wolfe, Salvador Dali, Heironymous Bosch, Rob Bottin..All of these artists have had a role in shaping the work Brad produces now.
Mrshoeshineman was always drawing or reading as a child and then came the teenage years of reading comics which was the initial inspiration for his work, in particular the artwork of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and most SLG comics. This influence lead him to take art at GCSE level with an awesome art teacher, who encouraged the him to embrace the stranger side of his creations and pushing him to truly explore what he was capable of creating from his lunatic imagination. (((Attach an example of work)))
After passing through this stage of the education system M.s.s.m went onto college to study Graphics Design, Film and Photography followed by a BTEC Arts and Design course. After finishing up the BTEC he had a short period working for almost everyone in the vicinity until landing a job at a DJ supply company doing the product photography and editing, website design and managing e-commerce channels such as amazon and eBay. He left this job and ended up landing a tattoo apprenticeship, which he finished and started tattooing which also brought with it a new confidence in the mrshoeshineman style, people would approach him for his unique visual language, only ever tattooing his own designs. This lead to getting commissioned to do illustrations and live art events. Since September '15 mrshoeshineman has been involved with several organisations raising money for charity by way of live painting events and auctions, working in collaboration with other artists and subjecting them to his love of vibrant colours and wrinkley goodness.
"The reason I love the art world so much is for the artists that challenge the established order of things, the rebellious nature of street art and graff captures how I feel about boring bland walls and by extension people. I have always admired those who are on the fringes of society, never quite fitting in because they have a bit too much character especially eccentricity."
This love of eccentricity and flamboyance lead to the use of the vibrant, neon and fluorescent colours in his work.
"Fluorescent colours really do impress me, we wouldn't be able to see the true vibrancy of these pictures without the use of a black-light, that artificial lighting aspect feels like I am bringing the viewer a new spectrum and perspective to see from, which is the main aim of my work. To get the viewer to see the world in new ways and challenge themselves with a newly gained perspective."
Mrshoeshineman uses a multitude of techniques and mixed media to get his work out of his brain and onto the page, wall, canvas or clay.
"Most work starts out in my sketchbook, getting developed to include more detail and shadows and then I approach the canvas with the pieces I think deserve full embellishment. When it comes to the canvas I often use reclaimed wood from out on my travels as well as traditional stretched canvasses."
He paints a base with spray paint and sketches roughly where he wants the forms to be, following up with the colour layers in airbrush, markers and of course paintbrushes. Once complete, the piece is coated with varnish in order to protect the piece and with some pieces he will add extra materials to add further embellishment such as glow in the dark powder encased in crystal clear resin.
"I was always a bit of a lunatic myself, being in love with horror movies and strange music growing up which wasn't a lot like many of the kids on my street. I embraced this characteristic a long time ago and I wish to inspire future generations, of those like myself, to create freely without the fear of not fitting in which I think stops them from truly exploring new worlds and possibilities"
