Beautiful highland holiday cottage to rent
Bac na beàrn is a beautiful traditional stone cottage in Glenelg situated in the picturesque West Highlands of Scotland, set close to the area's main village of Kirkton. The house is in an elevated position just a short walk away from the local shop, post office and an inn serving real ales and extremely good food.
A choice of beaches line this spectacular coastline, each more beautiful than the last, and all easily accessible from the house, many on foot. The Isle of Skye is so close you could almost throw a stone across to it - this is the closest point to it from the mainland anywhere in Scotland. In summer a small ferry crosses the Sound of Sleat to Kylerhea on Skye, taking cars and their passengers across the Kyle Rhea strait from Glenelg. The water is about 400m across and historically, drovers swam their cattle this way through the formidable currents having earlier been gathered at Uig on Skye. On arrival in Glenelg, they were then driven further south, eventually arriving at markets in Falkirk, Stirling and beyond. Today, the rather less hazardous journey to Skye can be made all year round via the Skye bridge at nearby Kyle of Lochalsh.
This charming detached whitewashed cottage was built in 1910, and is a cosy, well-appointed but simple dwelling. Spacious and comfortable, it has 4 bedrooms, two reception rooms and a large traditional kitchen with rustic table that seats 10. The house is partially double glazed, has oil-fired central heating, and spectacular views across the water to the islands beyond. With such breathtaking surroundings, it makes an idyllic retreat for those that enjoy the tranquility of the local beaches and highland landscape, without having to forfeit the necessary amenities which the village so ably provides.
