Claire Whalley is an experienced primary school teacher, specialising in Early Years Foundation Stage and a Level 3 Forest School Leader. She is a qualified first aider and holds enhanced DBS (CRB). She lives in Wadebridge, North Cornwall.
Claire trained as a Forest school Leader at Bridgwater college in 2008 and has been passionate about it ever since! She has regularly implemented Forest School and outdoor learning into the primary curriculum and has seen how it creates positive learning experiences and wellbeing. She is dedicated to sharing this ethos with children from 0-99 years!
Claire has recently become a Beach School Leader (qualification with Archimedes Training Ltd) and will soon be running Beach School sessions at a beach near you.
What is Forest School?
“Forest School is an inspirational process that offers ALL learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem, through hands on learning experiences in a local woodland or natural environment with trees. Forest School is a specialised approach that sits within and complements the wider context of outdoor and woodland learning.” - Forest School Association (FSA)
Forest School is quickly becoming popular throughout the UK but its roots are from Scandinavia and it is now a way of life for young children who enjoy learning in the great outdoors, throughout the year.
Children are given the opportunity to develop:
Confidence, independence and self-esteem
Good social skills
A variety of learning styles
Effective language and communication
Teamwork Positive attitudes and own interests
A relationship and awareness with the natural world
Practical and creative skills
A sense of fun
Outdoor learning experiences can provide children with the essential tools for life. There is substantial evidence to show how exposure to the natural environment has huge benefits on wellbeing, health, education and attainment.
"Must we always teach our children with books? Let them look at the mountains and the stars up above. Let them look at the beauty of the waters and the trees and flowers on earth. They will then begin to think, and to think is the beginning of a real education." - David Polis
