BAM is constructing a new West Wing extension to the historic Carnegie Library, part of the Dunfermline Museum and Art Gallery.

The new £8.2 million building will house exhibition space, a children’s zone, museum, café, retail units, a learning zone, activity spaces and visual art galleries. The library will also reopen its doors to the public. Visitors will be able to make use of all the spaces by passing over link bridges hanging below a vast glass atrium roof.

BAM will build the extension out of concrete and steel, and sensitively integrate the Carnegie Library’s historic elements with the contrasting elements of the new building, clad in wood, steel and stone.

It is due for completion by August 2016.

Sustainability

At the Dunfermline Museum and Art Gallery project, BAM we will aim to use energy as efficiently on possible on site. We will manage materials to ensure that waste is reduced as much as possible, and where waste is unavoidable, we will manage the process so as to recycle as far as possible. BAM is committed to using sustainable timber, so all the timber will be sourced from FSC or PEFC sustainable forests.

BAM has established Community Benefits targets for the project in conjunction with Amber Blue and Fife Council. These targets are also bought into by our supply chain, and our commitment includes ongoing training of employees; local sourcing of materials and resources, and engaging the local community. We plan to engage with local schools and businesses over the course of the project.

In addition to our own commitment, we partner our contractors in this, and insist that they too are committed to the environment and the local community.
