Basketry and Beyond promotes and celebrates all aspects of the craft of the basketmaker through events, exhibitions, basketry courses and festivals.
Basketry and Beyond has organised 3 major basketry festivals;
2003; Basket Fair and Water Gala, Porthleven- this focused on the fishing and farming basketry of the western seabord with curraghs and coracles featuring in workshop courses and a display in Porthleven Harbour
2007;Bamboozle, Porthleven- 18 ft. bamboo poles were used to create a spectacular kinetic fan which spanned the harbour gap at Porthleven. Basketry and Beyond provided a course for architects and professionals to learn the basics of bamboo construction.
2013; Basketry and Beyond, Dartington Devon. This last festival followed the pattern of the two previous festivals with courses and an accompanying exhibition running either side of a Festival Weekend of demonstrations, activities and a celebratory finale- The Light Fantastic Wearable Basketry Parade.
Hilary Burns has curated exhibitions of traditional woven baskets alongside examples of contemporary weaving.
Geraldine Jones has organised basket workshop courses and photographic exhibitions in Galicia.
The founder members have explored and experienced basketry techniques from the U.K, Galicia, Malta and South Africa and look forward to continuing to develop existing networks with these and further countries.
All members of Basketry and Beyond also teach basketry in the U.K
Basketry and Beyond was founded in 2002 to provide events and activities connecting with the craft of the basket weaver.
We will be putting up photographs and posting links related to associated aspects of basketry.
We hope to use this facebook page to network with organisations with similar aims and objectives.
Although based in the South West of England, Basketry and Beyond activities are gaining both a national and international profile
