If you are new to the world of Scuba Diving, the first thing you should do is arrange a Try Dive. By the end of the try dive you should know if its definitely for you.
Chapeltown Sub-Aqua Club is a private members club, and as such all new members must be approved by the Committee.
Don't worry! This involves an informal chat with at least three members of the committee, usually over a drink at the Commercial Inn, Station Road on a Wednesday night. It gives you an opportunity to ask the committee members any questions you may have. It also allows us to furnish you with important information about the club and the sport, and to ensure that scuba diving is the right sport for you and you are committed to finishing the training course.
Once this is done, all that is left to do is fill the paper work, pay the appropriate fees and start your course. The total cost for a new member (new diver) is approximately £300.00 for the first year, which includes a training levy and is reduced after a year. Talk to our Treasurer about paying this in chunks through the year.
If you are already a BSAC qualified diver joining from another club, you won't need to pay the Training Levy or for Training Packs (unless you intend to further your training with our club).
If you are a diver qualified with a different agency (eg. PADI), ask the committee members during your informal chat about what cross-over training you may need, and about training fees etc.
What to expect on a Try dive
Before getting in the water, you will be given a briefing on important safety information and about what you will be doing in the water. You will be given the opportunity to see the equipment being assembled and then briefed on its use.
You will enter the pool at the shallow end and once in the water you will be helped to put on the equipment. Being able to breath underwater is not a normal sensation, so for the first few minutes, you'll be getting your head just under the water and learning to breathe! When you are comfortable with this, you and your instructor will submerge. You will try swimming underwater taking a leisurely swim towards the deep end and back. You will get the chance to control your buoyancy and practice your new found movement skills by doing twists and turns!
At all stages in the pool, the instructor tell you what you are about to do and give you reassurance.
At the end of the Try Dive, you will be helped to de-kit. All that is left to do then is rinse off the kit and get changed.
