Variously called social alarm, telephone alarm, alarm phone, emergency phone, carephone, careline, lifeline, helpline, older persons alarm, dispersed alarm and solo these devices have been around since the early 1950's. The main manufacturers in the UK are Tunstall, Tynetec, Jontek, Carecall, Carephone, Bosch and Possum. The service is available through a number of national providers, including Age UK, local authorities, housing associations and private companies.
