Hywel Griffiths and Sons

When John and Elizabeth Griffiths relocated from Llangunnor, near Carmarthen, to Betws in the Amman Valley, on the edge of the developing South Wales coalfield, their son Thomas Griffiths established the business in 1875. The small carpentry, joinery and undertaking business continued with his son David John Griffiths and continued in to the next generation when sons Hywel Griffiths and Lyn Griffiths become well known builders, undertakers and carpenters serving primarily Betws, Garnswllt and villages adjoining Ammanford. Throughout his long working life and supported by his sons Peter and Keith the business continued to grow as funeral directors serving Ammanford and the Amman Valley. With Peter and Keith at the helm the business evolved as developers (Griffiths Brothers), monumental masons (Griffiths Memorials) and funeral directors (Hywel Griffiths and Sons) and have built a reputation for service and care that is well known through the area. In 1990 Richard Williams joined the company as a funeral director. The business further progressed as Cwmni Griffiths Bwtrimawr Y Betws to serve the whole of the Amman Valley and Llandeilo through it's associations with Keith Morgan and Sons, Evan Rees and Sons and Douglas Davies, Llandeilo. 2011 saw the company enter the 5th generation of the family when Rhodri Griffiths, Peter's son joined the company as a funeral director having previously served his apprenticeship on the construction side of the company. In joining the funeral side of the business Rhodri maintained the tradition of each generation being carpenters and joiners.

Keith Morgan and Sons

The family business began it's involvement in funeral directing locally in 1959, when as M.F. Harries and Son a hearse and limousines were provided to independent village undertakers. The business developed and in 1974 began arranging funerals from a premises at Cwmamman Road, Glamamman which included a chapel of rest. Service to the Amman Valley continued as the business evolved to become Keith Morgan and Sons in 1988, with new purpose built premises later being developed at 40A, Cwmamman Road, Glanamman. The family tradition continued when Keith Morgan and Sons joined Hywel Griffiths and Sons in 2005, enabling Gareth Morgan to continue to provide a personal service to the Amman Valley.

Evan Rees and Sons

Founded in 1900 as a grocery shop in Gate street, Gwaun Cae Gurwen, the business became known as Gate shop due to being built on the foundations of the toll gate. The business expanded and purchased its first lorry in 1930 and become known locally as Evan Rees and Sons, Gate Shop Garage. In addition to this the business also provided the Amman Valley with wedding and hackney cars. By 1935 the business further expanded by purchasing the first hearse in the Amman Valley. Initially the hearse was to provide independent village undertakers, however by the 1950's the company began proving funeral services to the Amman Valley. Evan Rees and Sons continued to provide its services to the Amman Valley and in 2008 joined Hywel Griffiths and Sons, enabling Kim Jenkins (nee Rees) to continue to provide a personal service to the Amman Valley.
