Elrig (sometimes spelled Eldrig) is a tiny hamlet or, more aptly, a small 'clachan', situated near Port William, within the old parish of Mochrum in southwest Scotland. It is located in the Machars area of Dumfries and Galloway, approximately 1 mile from Luce Bay - our nearest beach is about a mile and a quarter. The climate is probably one of the best in Scotland.
The street, for that's all that there is to Elrig, has a telephone box (non-cash type), a post box and a community message board. The mobile library visits every three weeks, while the coalman and fishman visit weekly.
Birthplace and one time home to Gavin Maxwell, author of books such as 'The House of Elrig' and 'Ring of Bright Water', Elrig was once a thriving community, complete with mill, smithy, school, shops and pub. Now, it doesn't even register on Facebook's locations, so I'm starting this page in the hope that, one day, it will.
