All of my experience and energies are devoted to a Successful outcome in Examinations in English. Every Student is taught on a 1:1 basis. Tutorials take place in the Study in my home. This is where I have access to extensive resources, including Internet support. Unfortunately my workload does not allow time for travel. I don’t do groups.
Each session is supported by a written Individual Progress Record. This records exactly what was covered in the Tutorial in addition to the Student’s own account of the key learning points covered during that particular session. This builds up to form a personal valuable resource for each Student since it contains a whole range of individual specific examination techniques together with information/references that they will want to remember especially during examination revision. This ensures also that parents can be aware of any Homework given, monitor the actual content of each Tutorial and, importantly, are kept involved.
A Level English Literature success requires an intimate knowledge of set texts together with the academic rigour of a structured, argued, planned and thought through essay that demonstrates an understanding of context with reference to appropriate wider reading. A Chief Examiner’s Report will testify to the importance of this in awarding the highest grades. Therefore the emphasis is on reinforcing those high scoring elements that will achieve this target. Students are coached on how to communicate their personal as well as academic response to literature. A thorough understanding of the often subtle usages of literary devices is the basis upon which students develop their skills. 1:1 teaching instills knowledge, confidence and a positive anticipation regarding examination performance.
GCSE English Language and Literature requires much of the above but at a more intermediate level. The core skill of Point, Evidence, Explanation is central to writing a concise essay. Again examination techniques are key to success in both English Language and English Literature. As well as clear guidance on interpretation of texts much time is devoted to an essay style that attracts the highest grades. Vocabulary depth is always going to impress. I always encourage the purchase of a quality Thesaurus or Synonym Dictionary. It goes without saying that expertise in Punctuation, Grammar and the avoidance of slang will delight even the most fatigued Examiner.
Emphasis on such thoroughness, together a relentless attention to detail ensures that all candidates are placed in the best possible position to procure grades of which they can be truly proud.
Primary School English covers all aspects of the subject from intensive help in skills of reading, writing, comprehension, grammar, spelling, pronunciation and diction to raising levels of confidence and self-esteem.
In summary, English Specialist Tuition has been accurately described as, “A very uplifting Educational Experience.”
SUCCESS RATES in A Level/GCSE - All Students achieve improvements in predicted grades of at least 1 and, more usually, 2 Grades. Resit candidates obtain similar results
SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
I have extensive experience and indeed Qualifications in Special Needs work, including those with learning difficulties such as Dyslexia, Autism and in particular Asperger’s Syndrome
CREATIVE WRITING
Currently I work with 2 aspiring writers who are working towards publication of their first novel. One is an adult while the other is a 14 year old.
I have successfully published numerous articles in both National and local Newspapers (see Down Recorder example). Moreover, I have written and had published a technical Legal Book and, in contrast, a selection of Poetry. In addition I have composed the lyrics for a song released through Gotham Records.
In short I am very aware of what is required to get material into print and to this end maintain a working relationship with sympathetic Publishing Houses.
