Evolution Plants is a new nursery, offering a wide and growing range of temperate plants to enthusiastic gardeners, plants people and collectors.
My name is Tom Mitchell. The profile picture shows me photographing a cycad in Mozambique. This is the sort of situation in which I feel most at ease. I always wanted to be a biologist and I pursued this ambition as far as an undergraduate degree and a PhD at Cambridge University. At that point, I realised that academic biologists are happy and fulfilled, but poor and so I pursued wealth and misery in the City for 14 long years. I started setting up this nursery as a form of occupational therapy and, in a sense, it has worked but now the time has come to try to repay some of the vast cost of establishing a small but ambitious business.
Over the last five years I have made more than 3,000 seed collections around the world. I have travelled in search of interesting plants from the Balkans to the Caucasus; from the temperate forests of eastern North America and northern Japan to the jungles of Vietnam; from the coastal sand dunes of southern Mozambique to the mountain ranges of western Europe. The seeds I have collected on these expeditions are growing on in the nursery and will appear on the website as they reach maturity. I will continuing exploring as long as Evolution Plants exists. Thank you for visiting our Facebook page. Please do come back regularly. I promise that things are going to get much, much more interesting...
