Public artwork by and for the people of Fort William.
Since 2010, Fort William underpass, which passes under the A82 at the east end of the High Street, has been host to a unique piece of public artwork that reflects the best of what Fort William has to offer - our history and culture, music, sport and the splendour of the local landscape.
Room 13 took the lead role in delivering the creative brief that was central to Fort William Underpass Redevelopment Scheme, involving many local people of every generation in a series of workshops and open studio sessions.
The whole process from ideas generation to the final execution of the work was collaborative and centred on active participation from members of the community. Several hundred individuals ranging in age from under two to over ninety years old contributed to the project, resulting in a unique piece of public art that remains a source of pride to the community.
Further developments are proposed for Fort William town centre, including an upgrade to our central precinct Cameron Square in order to provide a more relaxed environment which provides a venue for events and other activities.
Funding from Highland Council is now in place to deliver the concept which was consulted on last year, delivering a £500,000 investment into the town centre, to increase footfall and help sustain local businesses and jobs. The work will be carried out in late 2013 and will be completed before March 2014.
Room 13 is now leading the community consultation on prospects for new public artworks and other creative elements for the new look Cameron Square. Your feedback will help influence the detailed design of the area and to make sure Cameron Square becomes a place which local people and visitors of all ages will enjoy for many years to come.
