Once of a year, on all hallows night
The clatter of bones might give you a fright

As from all around ghosts abound,
From the city’s walls, inside and out.
To far-off shores, up north and down south

Then Walter* sends up the shout:

“Come join us, come join our dance!
Do not fear, do not flee
Them bones, them bones are friends of you and me!”

And as stones come to speak
On a dark foyle the Mountjoy creeks
Gates are dragged open, bridges are lowered,
Lamps are aglow as the City of Bones puts on a show

*Walter being the skeleton on the city’s crest
