A fun project run by fellas from Hope Church Pz&N and others, for the good of the fishing community, and especially ex-military and PTSD sufferers.

Why Hope?
Because it is needed! Life can be extremely hard and seemingly unfair, the best laid plans and hard work can come to nothing; a person can find themselves without any hope for the future very quickly. A sudden change of circumstance, an addiction or trauma can leave a person lost. Add to this the effect of loneliness and it can be devastating. The biggest single cause of death for men under the age of 45 is suicide and that is just not ok, not on our watch. Projects are needed that inspire and draw folk together, to grow and maintain friendships, teach new skills and build community working towards a common goal that is tangible and can be enjoyed.

Why little ships?
Because boats are awesome, they are things of beauty, they shout adventure and challenge, they inspire individuals and build team. They need love and looking after. They are also free from the restraint of the land; it’s good for the soul of a person to get out on the sea. We are British, we do boats!

Why the Ros Na Riogh?
The Ros Na Riogh is part of the furniture in Newlyn harbour. She has been in the fishing port of Newlyn for more than 40 years and there is many a story to be heard of times spent on her by many of the ‘local faces’. The ‘Ros’ is part of the history of this place, she bridges a gap between the old luggers and the more modern steel vessels that run from the place, as you look out over the harbour she is a boat that stands out, or at least she used to. Unfortunately she has fallen into disrepair and decisive action needs to be taken now, she is either lovingly restored or chopped up! From conversations and feedback there is a real passion for this to happen, someone just needs to find the cause and channel the passion. We believe HopeShips is the group to do this.

Why Newlyn?
Newlyn is one of the most ruggedly beautiful places on God’s earth! The historic fishing port is steeped in history and full of character, it is tucked in the corner one of the most beautiful seascapes in the British Isles. Newlyn is in West Cornwall, an area which largely relies on tourism for income but this little village is still very much a place of industry; many of the men and their families depend on the fleet of boats going to sea. Although the fishing industry has been in steady decline, it is still very much a vibrant place of work. There are many retired fishermen living here who would embrace and benefit from collaborating on a project like this, it would put smiles on the faces of many and it would add to the community.

What for?
A fully restored Ros Na Riogh in her mooring would be a focus point in the community; it would be a meeting place, a place for a cup of tea, a pasty and a chat. It would be a vessel that could be chartered by Community groups and charities bringing benefits to many. It would provide work, sustainable jobs. It would also be a piece of history saved for the next generation.
As a group we have a particular passion for ex-service personal suffering ptsd and other linked disabilities. We intend to link with the focused charities like Help4Hero’s and Combat Stress. We would be available to local reserve personal the MOD Chaplaincy dept’.
This ship fully restored in its home of Newlyn would be a place of recovery, discovery, community and above all ‘hope’.
