An experimental circus company that mixes high level circus with physical theatre, dance and live music in the comfort of their own living room.
The Living Room Circus (LRC) is a travelling circus company, planning to journey across Europe to different art festivals, taking in villages, towns and cities. An intimate and immersive event, the LRC will perform to a wide range of audiences with a variety of acts and innovative experiences. Open to children as well as adults, guests will be invited into a creative environment whilst enjoying acts from professional circus performers.
Our performances will take place in a circus tent or alternative venue, which will have been transformed into a cosy living room. Each show will be unique, offering a different experience for the audience depending on location and will be promoted to attract all ages. The show aims to provoke the imagination and inspire the audience through the physical language of circus. To maintain the intimacy and potential interaction between the audience and the performers, each show will be limited to approximately 30 People.
Not only do we want to perform and spread the joy of the art of circus, but also give back to all communities. Workshops and training days will be a further element of the LRC where we will teach a range of circus skills. Not only will this will be a further opportunity for both adults and children to be physical and learn some new tricks but another way of generating income for the Living Room Circus!
The living room is the communal space in the house we are all familiar with for relaxing and socialising. It is the hub of the house designed to be shared by many. Its walls hold everybody’s stories. It can be a meeting place, a solitary place or used for leisure and activities whilst also hosting guests.
In our show we aim to transform the inside of the tent into a rustic cosy living room. Soft, velvet drapes and textured screens will create a warm space. Recycled and up-cycled furniture, made by a local eco-friendly carpenter, will give an air of familiarity and safety and provoke the audience to think of the provenance and the potential durability of our possessions. All the circus equipment will be made to integrate into the living room setting.
The audience will sit comfortably on sofas, armchairs or cushions while the circus performance goes on around them; balancing on lampshades, tumbling over tables and dangling from the chandeliers. Through our physicality we will tell the story of what goes on in this living room. How different paths cross and stories are shared – a real theatrical experience. The audience will only be able to witness what goes on inside the living room giving them the opportunity to piece parts of the puzzle together. We aim to provoke the imagination and entertain the audience by pushing their familiar surroundings and situations to higher levels. Through breaking the fourth-wall we will involve the audience making them feel fully immersed and part of the living room story. This will allow each show to be unpredictable and different for both the performers and the audience.
The audience will be free to explore the space prior to the show and after, finding its quirky gems hidden in drawers and behind curtains. This could include the circus troupe’s special pumpkin pie recipe, available to buy from the Living Room Kitchen, or perhaps a riddle to get them thinking. This will engage the children in particular and encourage the adults to look for the child within.
Our debut show will take place in a yurt in East Sussex. Opening the newly established Fringe @ the Farm, in Forest Row, the performance will last 4 days, each show holding a capacity of 30. This will create a warm and cosy setting allowing the full feel of the intimacy between the audience and performers.
