Nicholas O’Hara Funeral Directors was formed in 1974 by Nicholas along with his father Alfred (Pat), a local police officer and his mother Brenda, a nurse and owner of Somerleigh Court Nursing Home which is where today the funeral head office in Wimborne runs from.
Nicholas entered the funeral profession at 15 years old and by the age of 20 had gained his diploma in both the fields of Funeral Directing and Embalming. As the business grew Nicholas saw the opportunity for the business to expand and in 1982 Nicholas and his family moved their home to Verwood to start a new funeral home in Vicarage Road and in 1987 a third office and chapels were opened in Station Road, West Moors.
Jackie, Nicholas’ wife joined him in the business in the 1980’s full time and helped modernise the office set-up and create a new partnership.
The silver fleet was added in the early 1990’s and the colour has remained the same since as is very much recognised as our own signature to a funeral.
In keeping with the family business, Anthony joined in 1997 and later that year his sister Natalie also. In all many family members have and still do work within the business, from spouses, aunts, uncles, sister-in-laws and many close family friends.
A business full of traditional values but done with the appreciation of the modern era, Nicholas, Jackie and family thrive to make the business achieve the high standards that Nicholas had always aimed for when entering this profession. The modern and distinguished looking silver fleet of Jaguar’s, an ambulance that is fitted and equipped to cater for all situations, the chapels and offices decorated tastefully to match their surroundings and staff attired on the day of a funeral in navy blue again emphasizing people’s more modern approach to funerals.
In 2009 the Verwood office moved to its new location in Manor Way and in the following year the West Moors office had an expansion into the adjoining unit and new look too.
The business drive and motivation today is still the same as in the beginning to give to all families the highest standard of care, facilities and help in their times of need.
