Only Foals & Horses was established to rescue and rehabilitate horses of all ages who are at risk due to abuse and neglect.
The Animal Welfare Liaison Network (AWLN) was started in 1989 to raise awareness of the plight of barely weaned young foals indiscriminately bred each year, a large number of which were being sold at auction for slaughter for meat.
In 1991 the organisation moved to larger premises at Oswaldtwistle and officially become a Sanctuary. A name was devised by considering the work the group had been undertaking, firstly caring only for foals but then moving into taking care of older horses too, and so was born Only Foals And Horses. The name was adopted with the kind permission of John Sullivan, scriptwriter for ‘Only Fools and Horses’.
Only Foals & Horses was established to rescue, rehabilitate and where possible re-home horses of all ages who are at risk due to abuse and neglect.
Based in Lancashire, England the charity cares for horses and foals across the United Kingdom.
Many of the horses and ponies we take in arrive at the sanctuary in poor condition and require expensive treatment.
The sanctuary welcomes visitors and works closely with local schools and other organisations to increase awareness of its activities.
The sanctuary is open daily from 1pm to 4pm
Our Tea Room is currently open on Sundays from 1pm to 4pm
