Penmaenpool Toll Bridge - <>

Grade 2 listed wooden toll bridge

Penmaenpool Toll Bridge was built in 1879 to replace the ferry crossing over the river Mawddach.
The Toll Bridge cottage was added in 1919.
The Bridge is linked to the tragic ferry disaster
of July 22nd 1966. The 'Prince of Wales' pleasure ferry from Barmouth to the hotel in Penmaenpool, tragically hit the Toll Bridge and sank.
It was carrying 39 people some of whom were children as it was the start of the school summer holidays.
Fifteen people were drowned and at least four were children.
The hotel proprietor at that time was John Antony Hall, his chef David Jones and the barman Bob Jones all worked hard to save many lives. Many more would have perished if not for their selfless acts of heroism. None were recognised for their bravery that day.
