Samuel Oldknow (1756 - 1828) transformed rural Marple and Mellor into a hub of industry. He built Mellor Mill, the largest cotton spinning mill in the world at the time, and was the driving force behind the creation of the Peak Forest Canal.

Over the next 3 years Mellor Archaeological Trust and Canal & River Trust will reveal, conserve and interpret Samuel Oldknow's legacy, through archaeology, learning and volunteering opportunities.

With this £2.3 million of investment, including a grant of £1.5 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, we can tell Oldknow's story, celebrate his achievements and put Marple on the map as a visitor destination.
