strategies put into place to address them.
Excellent relationships and a feeling of mutual respect between
young people and staff enhance the progress made by young
people. Promoting positive behaviour allows young people to
re-engage positively with their education, families and social
contacts. The home is well established in its local community and
enjoys positive community relationships. By promoting positive

EDUCATION

Mountwood Academy benefits from its centralised
location within Preston city, where our young people
have access to many local facilities. We are registered
to provide education for up to 25 young people, with
an age range from 8 to 19 years old. Mountwood
Academy specialises in helping young people who have
Statements of Special Educational Needs that highlight
mild to severe learning difficulties and/or assessed with
an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. The Academy is also able
to facilitate young people with physical needs such as
wheelchair users.
Teachers at Mountwood Academy employ an eclectic
selection of teaching methods. Initially an accurate
assessment of individual needs is undertaken which forms
the genesis of all personalised learning programmes
within our Academy. All teaching and support methods
employed are centred around a collaborative approach
to addressing the holistic developmental needs of the
young people in school.
Mountwood Academy follows an enriched National
Curriculum program and within this incorporates social
skills, interpersonal interaction, emotional intelligence
and personal, learning and thinking skills. After assessing
the needs of a child and on the basis of Individual
Education and Behavioural Plans, appropriate teaching
and learning activities are identified. All teaching
and support methods employed are centred around
a collaborative approach to addressing the holistic
developmental needs of the young people in school.
Work experience and many opportunities for learning
outside the classroom give the young people an
opportunity at the Academy to learn transferable skills
that they will be able to utilise later in life. The Academy
works closely with the Enterprise Business Partnership
scheme to enable appropriate work placement facilities
to be sourced for our young people. These links help
education to provide life skills training to the young
people, to help prepare them for independent living at
an appropriate pace.
Education is promoted within the care setting by offering
a full 24 hour curriculum to the young people. Children
are helped within the care setting to learn personal and
social skills, developing what is taught within school.
Children are also helped to harness appropriate levels
of independence during school lessons and at home,
to help the children identify their own personal needs,
abilities and individualism.
Any young people requiring specific therapy input
will have this taken into account in their every day
curriculum. Programmes can be devised by consultation
with therapists which would be incorporated into IEPs
and then through into everyday teaching to enable the
young people to have the maximum opportunity to
engage with their targets and succeed.
