The main aim is to provide an opportunity for people in Romsey and other villages to work with professional community artists on a Christmas event.
Romsey Community Lantern Project was founded at the beginning of 2012 and the main aim was to provide an opportunity for people in Romsey and its surrounding villages to work with professionally-trained community artists on a new Christmas event, which could be enjoyed by the whole town of Romsey.
The first (pilot) year was overseen by Alex Grant of Toozalii Arts, then due to popular demand the event took place again in 2013, when the workshops and parade were organised and run by a small, but enthusiastic, group of local volunteers.
Many of those who participated in the pilot scheme took part again in 2013, and they were joined by a number of community and youth groups new to the project. Those in their second year were encouraged to use their skills to make new shapes, whilst the newcomers made the standard pyramids. The resulting parade was a riot of colour and shapes much admired by an appreciative crowd. The Mountbatten Community Choir again joined in the fun, along with Test Valley Brass band.
