This is my story written by a local neighboring business. xxx
We’ve been focusing on inspirational women in the run up to Mothers Day, so with this in mind I popped into Sarah's to have a chat with a truly inspirational woman, Sarah Smith.
From humble beginnings, needing to borrow the first week’s rent from a good friend, she now owns outright three salons and employs 13 staff.
Although not from Rushden originally, Sarah was adopted into the community at 16 while working as a barmaid at the Rushden Band Club. After qualifying at 18 she offered a ‘haircut and a pint for a fiver’. Many people in Rushden still remember her from this time and the relationships she built then led to much appreciated support and encouragement when, after working on cruise ships before returning to Rushden’s Working Men’s Club, she opened her first barbershop in 2002, where I Do Back When is now. She had no idea then what her business would grow to be. In 2004 she opened her ladies salon two doors down and, after a chance encounter with the owner of her current premises and essential encouragement from her husband, Steve, combined the men's, ladies and beauty treatments together on the corner in 2009. She says that Steve’s belief in her and his hard work made that possible and Sarah’s is now very much a team effort.
What’s amazing about Sarah, despite her huge success and hard work, is how humble and grounded she is … giving praise to those who supported her, acknowledgement to her customers and constant encouragement to small businesses in Rushden hoping for a similar journey.
She gave us invaluable encouragement, advice and publicity when we opened our shop and continues to be an inspiration to us. I’m sure all who know her will agree.
