Sawston Youth Drama is the largest amateur musical theatre company in Cambridgeshire. With over 150 members across 4 groups, SYD are committed to providing opportunities in musical theatre for young people, and keeping the community entertained.
In 1968, the Sawston Youth Centre Drama Group was formed to cater to a few young people wanting to improvise some drama. By 1970 the group had switched tracks to draw in bigger cast numbers and battled the local authority for funding, producing the first official performance, "Oklahoma!". 28 years later the group had become a highly regarded and well attended musical theatre company, and was handed over to current leader Mark Long. The group became Sawston Youth Drama, and continued to thrive, eventually splitting to form SYD Juniors in 2005, and then further to SYD 7s as well in 2009. Last year we officially launched Sawston Theatre Company, the latest expansion of the SYD group for 18+ performers.
