An independent residential/day school for children and & young people aged 6-19 with special educational needs
The Sheiling School is an independent school offering high quality, individually-focused provision for children and young people aged 6-19, with moderate to severe learning difficulties. The School provides both residential and day placements.
We are passionate about education, and in providing exceptional opportunities for young people to develop their potential, real confidence and belief in themselves. We support pupils to achieve positive outcomes in a beautiful and therapeutic environment, designed to meet their educational and emotional needs.
As a specialist residential school, we have more than 60 years’ experience of understanding, accepting and developing children with complex special educational needs. We use an adapted Steiner Waldorf curriculum and offer a unique approach where staff work closely together to integrate education, care and therapy. This truly benefits pupils, especially those with diagnoses of autism, ASD, Asperger’s, PDA, emotional difficulties, behavioural problems, communication issues and attachment disorders.
Our pupils receive a broad, balanced and holistic education and are grouped in classes according to age rather than ability. The School also places a strong emphasis on arts and crafts and in developing pupils’ creativity. Our staff help children with educational, emotional and behavioural difficulties to learn, work, play, grow and develop resilience in a nurturing environment.
The School provides a safe, secure and well-supported learning environment and is set in 50 acres of beautiful and peaceful parkland in Thornbury, South Gloucestershire. We are one of the pioneer Outdoor Curriculum providers of therapeutic teaching in the UK. This approach utilises Bushcraft, which is particularly successful with pupils who are hard to reach and often don’t fit into a traditional classroom.
Our residential facilities provide a warm and friendly home life - based on mutual support and respect. This nurtures the healthy development of each pupil, so they are able to learn independence, life, self-help and social skills. We provide excellent care, nutritious meals which are primarily organic and a wide range of leisure activities.
Finally, we have our own purpose-built therapy building on-site, together with a team of experienced therapists. We provide a wide range of specialised therapies to remove obstacles to learning, open doorways to new experiences and awaken latent abilities.
