We are an inclusive boxing club catering for all students from the age of 10 onwards. We are not exclusive to boxers and welcome anyone to train with us!
Who are we?
Tavistock Amateur Boxing Club - ABC is an inclusive club aimed to share our love of the noble art with any and all that are interested in training.
We offer two classes per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Classes are split into Junior and Senior sessions. Juniors sessions are open to ages 10-14 and run from 6-7. Seniors sessions are open fro age 15+ and run from 7-8 (please arrive 10 mins before class to get wraps on and be ready to train).
We welcome anyone to come along and train, regardless of fitness or ability. We currently run our classes in the upper mezzanine area of the Bodyzone Gym. For those looking to compete, squad sessions run on Fridays by invitation only. We also have a run club session on Saturday mornings from 8:30 am.
Why train in boxing?
People train in boxing for all sorts of reasons. Some train purely for fitness, (believe me it’s a hell of a workout!) others for the discipline, stress relief (wailing on the heavy bag sure helps unwind the stresses of every day life!) self control, fun, self defence, self confidence, weight loss, or even to train for competitive bouts in the ring. Training in boxing, as with many martial arts, is as much about achieving your own personal goals, as it is about learning and developing new skills.
Will I have to fight?
No. The majority of people that walk into a boxing gym have no intention to fight. Nobody will be asked to do anything they do not feel comfortable with. Sparring at Tavistock ABC and ultimately boxing in competitive bouts, is entirely optional. However, for those who are motivated to compete, Tavistock ABC is fully affiliated to the ABAE, and when ready, we can support boxers to compete. Who knows? perhaps the next Anthony Joshua, or Nicky Adams, will cone through Tavistock ABC.
Who’s the coach?
Head coach: Tony Fenell. Tony is an experienced boxing coach, with a love of the sport. Tony holds LV II ABA instructors certification. Tony has been teaching boxing for many years and was an inter-forces competitor himself, during his time in the Navy. Competing at a national and international level. Tony also studied in Kyukoshin (Full contact) Karate for around seven years. Tony brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the club and retains his close links with clubs and instructors in the area, especially Devonport ABC in Plymouth.
Assistant coach: Andy Melville. Andy holds a LV I ABA instructor certificate. Andy also actively trains in MMA and Muay Thai. Andy came to boxing later in life (age 28) and knows first hand the benefits to health and fitness that training can bring. Andy started training at around 120kg (approx. 20 stone) and last competed at 88kg (13st 12lb).
Assistant Coach: Grant Metters. Grant started training boxing with his father at a very early age and brings this knowledge and enthusiasm for the sport to training sessions. Grant has returned to the sport over the last few years and is developing as a coach. Grant also holds ABA lv I coaches qualification.
All our Coaches are CRB checked and have first aid and safeguarding training.
What do I need to bring? what should I wear?
Although many students after training for a while, like to purchase their own equipment. Everything you will need to start off is provided at the club. All you will need to bring is, a hand towel (you will get sweaty!) and some water. Clothing wise, just wear trainers and general athletic gear. Shorts and a T-shirt are fine, or a tracksuit, depending on what you are most comfortable in.
How much does it cost?
Training fees currently stand at £4 per class for seniors (16+) £3 per class for Juniors (10 -16). Run club session is £2 and for ages 15+. We also run 1-1 or small group sessions in boxing or kickboxing. (price on enquiry)
The hardest thing about training, is walking through the door. Once you get here, you will love it!
