Experiential learning at a variety of habitats around the North Devon coast.
The Coastal Classroom uses the sand dunes at Braunton Burrows Biosphere reserve, as well as rocky shores, saltmarshes and even rivers to provide the opportunity to get up close to the species that live there and learn about the environment in which they live.
A variety of curriculum linked topics can be covered (examples below) and a bespoke programme will be worked out for each group.
KS 2 and 3: marine food chains and webs, sand dune survey, habitats and adaptations, plankton, keys, grouping living things, tides (moon and sun).
KS4 : sampling and survey techniques at a variety of habitats, indicator species surveys, adaptations, classification, keys.
A-level: sand dune, saltmarsh, river and rocky shore ecology. Hypotheses, methodology, results presentation and statistical analysis of data. Species diversity, adaptations, classification, keys, variation.
