The Shire at Byfield - Wildlife Garden

A wildlife garden constructed next to Byfield allotments, with a 'Shire' feel about it that any Hobbit would be proud of!

The garden occupies an area that was supposed to be allotment number 1, however, because of its low lying nature and tendency to flood was never used.
Apart from briefly being cleared in 2007 by a nature charity, it had been left to be over grown.
In January 2011, I mowed a few paths, and then over the next three years slowly cleared the weeds to develop it into a nature garden.
It has been challenging with so much of it either to wet or too stony, but getting there.
The plants have either been bought by myself, given or cultivated from cuttings and seeds. There was no real plan, as it has just evolved as plants or time has allowed.
One of my friends remarked it looked a bit like the shire from the Hobbit book, so hence the name!

All my own work so far, so taken a few years to develop, but gardens are never finished anyway!
