Lancashire / Yorkshire Folk Heritage. Information regarding the lives, works & interests of Becket Whitehead and Henry B. (Harry) Whitehead of Saddleworth
For those who don't know, Becket Whitehead was foremost a well respected geologist who also knew quite a few traditional lancashire folk songs when Ewan MacColl was collecting in the 1940's, and he was recorded by the BBC in 1952. These recordings are available on the internet if you look thoroughly.
H.B. Whitehead (Great Uncle Harry to me) was a poet and a key part of the lancashire dialect revival that occurred in the early 1900's and his work is published in a number of books that are out of print but still available. Some of his work was put to music. I'm in the process of tracking these down, and I've made good headway already.
I'll be sharing more and more of what I find, photos, manuscripts, recordings etc, so if you think this may interest you or anyone you know, then as I say, visit and like, so that you get the updates as they happen.
Better still, please contribute with whatever information you may have, however insignificant you may feel it is. Perhaps some of you knew either of them. Perhaps you have some sheet music, or other publication. Don't assume I already know what you know, because chances are I don't!
