Veg on the Edge (VotE) are a group of local people who have a vision: to turn unloved areas of wasteland in Shipley into community food growing spaces.
ABOUT VEG ON THE EDGE
Veg on the Edge (VotE) are a group of local people working together to explore and support opportunities for community food growing in Saltaire/Shipley.
We formed in 2012 with the original aim of transforming an unloved bit of wasteland behind Shipley Fire Station into a community food garden. Unfortunately due to constraints over securing a lease for this site from Bradford Council, this project is currently on hold. However we are continuing to work with other groups in the area with similar aims and haven’t yet given up on our quest for a substantial site to develop an urban community food garden in Shipley/Saltaire.
Our Aims
To work together to reclaim areas of derelict land next to our homes.
To transform and maintain these sites as communal food growing areas, community spaces and natural habitats for wildlife and native plants.
To develop the gardening and cultivation skills of our members.
To provide opportunities for growing to those who do not have access to space to grow their own food
To consider and promote the different opportunities that the site can offer to new and marginalised groups of people to become involved.
To work with Bradford Metropolitan District Council and any other group or organisation that helps promote the ethos and development aims of the group.
To adhere where possible and practicable, to sustainable green practices including organic principles.
To ensure the community gardens are physically accessible and inclusive, as far as is reasonably practicable.
To contribute to the general improvement of the physical environment of Shipley.
To develop community cohesion within the neighbourhoods of Shipley.
To be financially self-sustaining.
To work with the local authority in taking action to protect members and the garden against damage, trespass and theft and to secure the site from vandals, dog fouling and other anti social activities.
