Warwick Economics Summit is an annual student-run international forum. Since 2001 we've welcomed a collection of the biggest names in economics, politics and international relations to talk to some of the world's brightest students.
Warwick Economics Summit (WES) is one of the largest student run academic conferences of its kind in Europe. Now having run for over a decade, the Summit has evolved in form and stature into a truly international forum where talented students from various universities listen to some of the world's most revered and inspirational speakers on a wide range of interesting topics.
The Summit’s issues go far beyond economics based topics, as it encompasses the broader spheres of the social sciences, including development, politics, psychology and international relations. It is this wide scope and diversity that sets the Summit apart from other events, ensuring that it remains relevant and in tune with today's wider issues.
In its previous incarnations, the Summit has welcomed such distinguished speakers as Professor John F. Nash Jr (Nobel Laureate 1994), Alistair Darling (former UK Chancellor of the Exchequer), John Kay (leading UK economist and Financial Times Columnist), Johannes Linn (former World Bank Vice President), Dr. Kandeh Yumkella (Director General of UNIDO), Ewald Nowotny (Governor of the Austrian Central Bank) and David Daly (Director of Nike Football Club Business).
However, the Summit is not just a conference. On the Saturday night of the weekend, we host the ever-popular Summit Ball. This semi-formal evening includes a 3-course dinner, an infamous quiz and an opportunity for delegates to kick back and relax.
Since the Summit touches on such a diverse array of global issues, all students regardless of their backgrounds are encouraged to attend. Over the past decade, the Warwick Economics Summit has rapidly become a highly respected event at the University of Warwick, so much so last year’s Summit welcomed more than half its attendees from universities other than the University of Warwick. These included students not only from the UK (LSE, Oxford and Cambridge), but also from a broad range of countries, among them North America (Harvard, UC Berkeley, Princeton University, Stanford University), Italy (Bocconi University), Sweden (Malmö University), Russia (Kazan State University), and Turkey (Bilkent University).
Throughout the weekend, the Summit tries to instill in all attendees the spirit of creating lasting inter-university, international links with other students, whether it be in discussion or over dinner.
The Warwick Economics Summit remains a sell-out success each year because of its quality, its coherence and because of the tremendous efforts of its team.
The 2017 Summit will take place between the 10th and 12th of February 2017 at the University of Warwick.
