The well-established Equine Training and Development Centre provides high quality housing for ridden horses of all types. The facilites include 2 large indoor arenas, floodlit outdoor ménage, therapy barn including a state of the art hydrotherapy treadmill, solariums and grazing. The unit has several permanent resident horses plus a variety of loaned horses who return to the site during teaching periods. The yard houses approximately 50 animals at any one time. This includes a range of horses from native ponies through to show jumpers, eventers and allrounders of all types which are accessed by our students for their education.
Its modern facilities provide an excellent backdrop for student training. Students are involved in all aspects of yard and stable management and equine therapy, from rehabilitation to competition.
The enterprise is used as an integral part of the teaching at Writtle. It provides valuable practical and ridden training for students on all HE and FE Equine courses, facilities for grassland management teaching, equine therapy and rehabilitation, the site also produce realistic economic data used by students studying business management modules. The equine units are well resourced and regularly used for the purpose of research into a wide range of areas both by undergraduate and postgraduate students, and outside commercial organisations such as feed companies, bedding manufacturers and stable equipment suppliers
