The oldest building in Pevensey still in use for its original purpose
St Nicolas Church is the oldest building in Pevensey still in use for its original purpose: it has been used for worship and prayer without a break for 800 years. It was completed in 1216, so in 2016 its 800th Anniversary will be something to celebrate. All through the year there will be a programme of events: concerts by internationally acclaimed musicians and singers and by local artists, talks and lectures on local history and a mass of local events.
All these events will be to entertain and enlighten the public and to show them that St Nicolas' is a friendly place to meet in, and for them to discover that this ancient church is a place of peace and friendship and fellowship. But also they will help us to raise some funds to continue with the ongoing restoration of this historic Grade 1 Listed Building, which is being supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
