The Calderdale district has a total population of approximately 191,000 with the minority ethnic communities comprising 10% of the total population.
The district comprises of the mainly semi-rural Upper Valley (Hebden Bridge and Todmorden) and the urban Lower Valley (Brighouse and Elland) with Halifax being the largest township and commercial centre. In addition there are many smaller communities spread throughout the Upper Valley, all of whom have their own distinct identities and policing needs.
Throughout the district there is mixed housing provided by the local authority, social landlords and private ownership. The largest estates are in North Halifax, which is generally recognised as the most socially deprived area in the district, although there are small pockets of similarly deprived areas throughout the district.
